The first round of the XVIII PANAMERICAN YOUTH CHESS FESTIVAL– Medellín 2007 began at 9:30 (Colombian time) with the presence the young players, representing 18 countries, who are playing in the main continental event of the sport until July seventh at The Chess Park (Parque del Ajedrez) of the Atanasio Girardot sports complex.
The second round will start in the afternoon. The third one will be effective on Tuesday not before 15:00 (Colombian time) at the Chess Park in the following categories: U-6, U-8, U10, U12, U16 and U18.
First round, first impressions
The U16 category of the XVIII PANAMERICAN YOUTH CHESS FESTIVAL– Medellín 2007 began with no real surprises in the main tables. The experience and solid game of the candidate to Grand Master, Emilio Cordova (2492 Elo), was ahead of the strong game of the Colombian player Carlos Caicedo. Other Colombian, IM David Arenas (2084 Elo) beat, with dark pieces, the game of Joseph Gill, from Trinidad and Tobago. The Ecuadorian Juan Cardenas was defeated by Argentinean Nicolás Mayorga. Peruvian FM Renato Terry (2215 Elo), with dark pieces, got ahead of the game performed by Fabian Duran.
In the women’s U16, the Colombians began with victories: Heimy Polgar Ramirez beated Leonela Gonzales from Venezuela. Diana Salcedo defeated Mariela Cort´s from Chile, and Olivia Villa did the same with Peruvian Angie Palacios. Lina Panesso from Colombia and Ingrid Han from Venezuela ended the game in a friendly stalemate.
In U18, the favorite for the title, Eduardo Iturrizaga, began with a victory against Paulo Jonquera from Chile and the Colombian FM Andres Gallego correspond to the previous favoritism, beating Sebastian Decuadro from Uruguay. The surprise of the round was Cristian´s Gil victory over Álvaro Valdés, third in the Elo FIDE ranking. Among the ladies, the favorite ones didn’t give up anything in the first round: Argentinean Stephanie Amed defeated Adrian Diaz. In a game between Colombians, WIM Jenny Chiriví beat Manuela Gamboa. Yesenia Echeverry from Colombia fell against the second seed, Vanesa Feliciano.
In the U10 category, the best rank of the tournament, and second place at the World School Chess Championship, Joshua Ruiz (Colombia 2223 Elo) overcame David Josué Mesa from Ecuador. Joshua will play, with dark pieces, against Diego Cisneros from Perú in the second round. In the main tables, Juan Pablo Molano defeated Kevin Muñoz and Juan Manuel Posada did the same to Daniel Neira.
In the U12, the Peruvian FM Jorge Cori (2267) got rid of Daniel Dayklan from Colombia, Andres Duran from Costa Rica surprised Andres Aguirre (2198) from Colombia.
In the youngest category, U6, Maria de los Ángeles Varela defeated Nikole Martinez, finishing with three queens and finally checkmated her opponent.
